Rum Punch Recipe

Rum Punch recipe — The original party starter who learned to share but never learned when to stop. Made with rum. Originally from Barbados.

I'm the friend who shows up with a massive bowl and says 'I made enough for everyone!' then proceeds to get the whole crew absolutely sideways. I believe in the ancient wisdom of 'one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak' because balance is everything... until the third serving.

The recipe for rum punch was so standardized in the 18th century that it became a literal rhyme: 'One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak.' This proportional formula was taught to British naval officers and spread across the Caribbean colonies.

Born in 17th century Barbados when British colonists mixed local rum with available tropical fruits and spices. Naval officers brought the recipe throughout the Caribbean, with each island adding its own twist to the communal drinking tradition.

Ingredients

• 2 oz dark rum
• 1 oz fresh lime juice (one of sour)
• 2 oz simple syrup (two of sweet)
• 4 oz pineapple juice (four of weak)
• 1 dash grenadine (for color)
• 1 pinch fresh nutmeg (grated)

Instructions

1. Combine rum, lime juice, simple syrup, and pineapple juice in punch cup filled with ice.
2. Stir well and add a dash of grenadine for color.
3. Garnish with orange slice and fresh grated nutmeg.
