Malbec recipe — The brooding French expat who found their true calling in Argentina's mountains. Originally from France.
I'm the wine equivalent of a leather jacket — dark, smooth, and effortlessly cool. Originally from France, but I really came into my own after moving to South America. I'm approachable without being boring, sophisticated without being snobby.
Malbec was nearly extinct in its native France after the devastating phylloxera epidemic and frost of 1956, but found its salvation in Argentina where French agronomist Michel Pouget brought cuttings in 1868. Today Argentina produces 75% of the world's Malbec.
Born in the medieval wine region of Cahors in southwestern France, Malbec was once called 'the black wine of Cahors' for its deep, inky color. French immigrants brought it to Argentina in the mid-1800s, where the high altitude and intense sun of the Andes foothills transformed it into something even more spectacular than its homeland version.
